The Cactus and Succulent Garden at The Sherman Library and Gardens
We at Garden Gluttony visited the Sherman Library and Gardens in Corona Del Mar right off California’s famed Pacific Coast Highway on a beautiful, sun-filled day last November. Although the garden is small and intimate, there are many interesting aspects to this botanical gem. Today we will only show you the Cactus and Succulent Garden because it blew our socks off even though we weren’t wearing any!
This is on the gate that welcomes you into the garden. It is an indicator of the elements you will see once inside.
This walled garden is all about design and creativity as is evidenced by the fact the plants are not named and tagged. It was designed by Mathew Maggio (an intern at the gardens) who artistically combined succulents, bromeliads, rocks, shells, glass chips, driftwood and sunken containers.

This is a quote from Matthew in the above-mentioned Pacific Horticulture article on what he hoped the garden the garden would do: “shatter conventional views about succulent plants, engender lasting excitement over succulents and inspire design creativity.”
